Hip Hop and Guitar (part 1)

I already talked about the role of guitar in Hip Hop music: since the mid(late 80s, guitar has played a simple, minimal, but important role in this genre, that is famous (or : it used to be famous) for creativity, open mind, groove and a general sense of happiness and optimism in life. Some examples? the simple bending riff in Me Myself and I by the band De La Soul (classic Hip Hop of the late 80s/early 90s) -check also their remake of Curiosity Killed the Cat’s “Name and Number”, called Ring Ring Ring. I already talked about L L Cool J, who, to me, is one of the most important artists of this genre and he really produced a lot of amazing tracks. Another important band of that era, it’s A Tribe Called Quest: smooth and jazzy vibes, with a minimal guitar and even a sitar in Bonita Applebaum– and another minimal, but more funky guitar in the classic Can I kick it ? And how can we forget about The Notorius B.I.G. with his Sky’s the limit…that super sexy guitar doin a slide, creating the perfect texture with the pads and the smooth bassline…super cool, man. And I def cannot forget about 2Pac,,,one of the most important rappers of this era, listen to his amazing track Dear Mama– smooth and sweet with a simple and soul oriented (a little funky, too) guitar…and the disco/funky classic all eyes on me– with a funky, classic vamp.

This song of 2Pac has got one of the best guitar licks that I ever listened to Picture me rolling– another classic, a must.
